Book Review: 4000 Weeks, Time Management for Mortals

Updated: Feb 18, 2022

Recommendation: A must read for anyone who would describe their life as busy.

The delightful Oliver Burkeman shares the morbid tidbit that we all only have 4000 weeks to live in the title of his new book: 4000 Weeks. Time Management for Mortals.

Wait, what?? I only have 4000 weeks to live?? And 2248 are already over?? Oh my god, I'm almost dead. I need to do all the things right now.

If I walked by this book in a book shop, I wouldn’t likely stop. The cover design is boring and the title, while accurate, is also terribly un-compelling. Yet, behind this deceptive disguise is a wildly interesting book. A book that, dare I say, will change your life.

It is a true page turner. That’s right. I said it. A page turner. About time management. But that’s the thing. This book is less about time management and more about how to live a fulfilling life in spite of our never ending to do lists.

If you are like me and see another book about time management and think, “Fuck. Time. Management. I’ve already done all the things and none of them work.” This book is for you.

And might I say that Oliver Burkeman is funny! His dry wit had me cracking up in public while reading a time management book. I’m sure people were seriously contemplating calling the police to have me committed.

I’m eternally grateful to the New York Times book review for reviewing this book. I never would’ve picked it up otherwise. This book is a must read for anyone who is alive and desires to enjoy the time they spend being alive. I can't recommend this book more highly.
